Three pink tickets had already curled beneath the number dispenser when Luna tugged a fresh strip and eased into a slate-blue chair beside the water cooler. A terrier waited under the seat; its grey fur twitched each time the ceiling speaker crackled. To pass the pause, Luna pulled a slender caliper from her pocket—the tool her aunt, a laboratory scientist, had once forgotten at home. She opened its jaws around a pen, comparing widths the way some children stack coins.

A nurse in pale scrubs walked by and offered a witty shake of her head. Luna grinned, twisted the screw a little farther, and the caliper slipped from her fingers. The metal glided across the smooth linoleum, tapped the dog’s leash handle, and jolted it forward. Startled, the terrier sprang back; the handle whipped upward and struck the cylindrical tower of plastic cups perched on the cooler. Cups burst free like tiny frost-white wheels, knocking a clipboard, which clattered against the waiting-room wall before slowing to a spin.

Luna lunged after the rolling cascade. A chair leg blocked the first cup, but two more slid under the corridor door, chasing each other with quiet friction. She crouched, gathered the scattered pieces, and the terrier’s owner murmured, “He looks apprehensive; sorry about that.” Luna shrugged, stacked the cups again, and wiped a drop of cooler water from the caliper’s edge. When she returned to her seat, the strip of paper that had been tight in her hand now dangled toward the floor, and the dispenser beside her clicked once more as another ticket fluttered outward and drifted in a widening spiral toward the blue-grey tiles.

露娜撲向四散的杯子。一根椅腳擋住第一只杯子，但另兩只仍一路滑到走廊門底，貼著地面互相追逐。她蹲下收拾散落物，狗主人小聲說：「他看起來有點緊張，抱歉。」露娜聳肩，再度把杯子疊好，並擦去卡尺邊緣的水珠。回到座位時，她手上的紙條已鬆鬆垂落，而身旁的號碼機又發出一下輕響，一張新的票在空中打著越來越大的旋往藍灰色地磚飄去。
