English 原文
A deep ventilator rumble drifted along the smooth marble floor, brushing Iris’s shoes as she stepped into the dim ceramics hall. The polished surface felt almost slippery under her soles, and each stride sent a cool shiver through the thin rubber of her sneakers. A tiny sparrow, somehow trapped indoors, flicked past the overhead lamps and tapped its claws against the metal ductwork. Iris paused at a tall display case; inside, a clay flask that had once carried nepenthe waited behind glass, its rim chipped, its belly flecked with rough mineral grains.
She wanted a closer look at the uneven glaze, yet a tour group began to huddle together right in front of her, coats brushing, bags bumping. Their overlapping shoulders formed a moving wall. Iris had examined the floor map earlier and noticed an interactive corner that stored seat pads for children. She slipped to that nook, fingers pressing into the spongy fabric of a folded cushion. The first pad slid from her grip; the woven edge rasped against her palm, leaving faint fibers behind. With a firmer squeeze she lifted another, carried it back, and set it on the ground beside the case. Standing on the soft block raised her height, but glare from overhead lights painted bright bands across the glass. She cupped one hand against the pane; her skin met cool, flawless smoothness, yet the reflection still masked the flask.
The sparrow swooped lower without warning and skimmed the tour guide’s hat. Gasps rose, and the group shifted aside. Space opened. Iris edged nearer, pressed both hands around her brow, and the glare thinned. A single amber bead clung to the inner curve of the flask’s neck. Even through glass she sensed how that drop would soon evaporate, leaving only a faint ring of residue. She lingered until new footsteps echoed behind her, then stepped down and returned the cushion to the corner. Above the vacant spot, the sparrow wheeled once more, its wings brushing the duct with a dry, rhythmic whisper that carried on after Iris walked away.
