Nora crossed the bright floor with a stack of drafts, the edges flashing as they passed each fixture. A ginger office cat lounged on the window ledge; its shape formed a neat silhouette against the outdoor glow. Printer hum drifted along the walls, while a single shaft of ceiling light struck the vacant reception desk like a spotlight. Nora aimed for the printer area, wanting fresh copies of an agenda that showed a seaside cottage on the title page. Inside the break room, leftover rolls from coworkers’ habit of breaking bread at noon still lined the counter, their crusts dull beside the fluorescent glare.

Near the printer, the control panel shone, yet the output tray stayed blank. Nora pressed PRINT; the interior rollers spun, then halted. A warning lamp pulsed, casting a dim pulse across the cat’s twitching ears. She opened the side hatch; thin dust of paper decay glittered in the beam from her phone, but no jam appeared. Joel stepped from the stairwell, his jacket back-lit, and lifted the empty tray as if to declare the machine hopeless. He tried again; sheets moved halfway, stopped, and retreated. The cat leaped down, paws landing in the narrow pool of light beside the printer. Its tail brushed a switch, and a gust from the ventilation duct sent abandoned sticky notes fluttering along the floor. One note slid under the printer frame and pushed out a tiny crumb from the earlier bread. The piece lodged between rollers; its pale surface caught the glare like a pebble in shallow water. Joel knelt, pried it free, and the motor whirred, though the first page emerged streaked. Nora was reaching toward the cat, one hand hovering above the glowing control panel.
