English 原文
The spongy rubber beneath Noel’s sneakers pushed upward each time he shifted weight. Amber daylight spilled across the playground, turning every metal bar a gentle copper. It was midsummer, and warm air carried a faint tree-sap smell. A lone swing arched high; Troy occupied it, chains humming. Noel aimed to rise on the next seat and elevate himself above the slide roof to watch drifting clouds. While waiting, he crouched near the sandbox and used one finger to jot zig-zag lines in the caramel sand. The swing set had been painted a bright orange during spring, yet tiny rust freckles had already appeared.
Minutes slid by; Troy’s legs slowed but never stopped. From the far pond, a sudden squall rolled in, pushing golden dust ahead of cool drops. Wind made the vacant seats clatter together. Noel’s hair whipped, and scattered rain spotted his shirt before he could grasp the nearest chain. Water gathered on the flat seat and formed a shallow mirror. He scanned the ground and located a short plastic shovel forgotten near the slide. Lifting it, he drew the edge across the seat to sweep moisture away. The first sweep worked, but another gust blew fresh spray over the metal and erased his effort. Rosa hurried from the climbing frame, sharing a quick grin; she tipped a broad bucket against the seat to shield it, yet the wind flipped the bucket aside.
They tried again: Noel wedged the shovel beneath the slick board to elevate one end, and Rosa packed sand under the higher edge so future rain would slide away. The dark cloud drifted on, leaving orange steam curling from the rubber tiles. Drops still clung to the chain links, yet the seat stayed mostly clear. Rosa stepped back first, palms streaked with ochre sand; Noel followed, shoes dark with moisture. A squirrel perched on the bench armrest flicked its tail, bounded onto the tilted seat, and sent a fresh bead of water tumbling onto the ground.
