English 原文
Wren pushed the mill’s river-warped door inward, its bottom edge grazing the flagstone as water murmured beyond the wall. Hardly had she crossed the sill when cold spray dotted her sleeves, carried by the wheel’s wide outreach above the sluice. Everything lay where her memory said it should—grindstone, flour bins, the dangling scoop—yet each surface told of slow abrasion. The handle of the grain chute, once square, now showed a slight hollow where many palms had braced; the oak beam beside it bore a thin line of silver where countless sacks had scraped.
Farther in, Tess knelt among spare parts, arranging a treasure trove of wooden pegs, leather seals, and iron pins on a canvas sheet. The two women lifted a balky hopper together; what stopped them was not weight alone but damp grain clinging inside. His fingers still curled around the rim, Wren put forth her foot for balance, shoes slipping on powdered husks. Rarely did the wheel pause; still, their collective effort found a rhythm with its turning. Tess’s timely assistance—one quick shoulder under the bin—let the load tip enough for stale kernels to pour out in a sluggish cascade that thudded onto the floor.
The emptied hopper revealed a different story: beneath the husks, the interior boards formed a shallow swirl mirroring the river outside, a pattern Wren had never noticed during busier seasons. She crouched, tracing the groove’s smooth grain with the back of a fingernail, then drew her hand away to listen; no sooner had she risen than fresh flour dust landed on the mark, soft as morning frost. What halted her next was silence from Tess, who stood watching the same swirl, sleeves dotted white. Without a word, they set the hopper upright again, its lighter shape easy to guide onto its brackets. Wren stepped back through the door she had entered, and the wheel kept revolving, spray pattering against the threshold where her footprints darkened the stone.
