Nell straightened and tapped the iron casing, hoping her signal would rise above the pulse of gears. Felix appeared beside her instead, sleeves rolled high, a rag twisted around his fingers. Though smaller than her, he wedged a shoulder under the counterweight beam, and together they flexed until the chain slackened. Only by leaning their combined weight forward did the drum finally pivot, its metal skin releasing a sour-sweet puff that filled the shaft. Inside lay a cracked jar, dried elderberry jam cemented between teeth; tucked beneath, a brass boar serving as makeshift ballast now glistened purple. Nell met Felix’s glance, no word spoken, yet the tower’s rhythm resumed, slower, steadier, as if respecting their intrusion.

They hauled the jar to a side shelf, wiped gears, and reset the beam. The sweet rot smell thinned but never vanished; instead it threaded through iron and oil like memory refusing to leave. Before climbing back to the landing, Nell paused, leaning closer to examine the panel again. Bride, groom, and musicians stood mid-step, their painted path once cut by that twist and turn of syrup now scraped away. Scarcely had the scene re-emerged in its muted colors before she drew a breath and followed Felix upward. Near the stairhead, the little brass boar now glimmered clean, a thin ribbon of elderberry scent drifting around its polished snout.

他們把罐子移到側架，擦淨齒輪，再次調好配重樑。甜腐氣味雖淡仍未散，反而像記憶般穿梭在鐵與油之間。回到平台前，奈爾停步，湊近再次端詳那塊畫板。新娘與樂手定格在半步之間，他們的路徑曾被黏稠曲折的糖痕截斷，如今已被刮除。畫面顏色才剛重新浮現，她便深吸一口氣，跟隨費利克斯往上走。階梯口，那隻小小的黃銅野豬已被擦亮，淡淡接骨木莓香在閃亮的豬鼻周圍飄盪。
