She followed the sound, palms grazing the rough rail where flour dust hid in the grain. Muffled thumps from the wheel did little to obfuscate a sharper scrape that rose from the chute’s throat. The texture under her fingers shifted: first smooth, then ridged, then sticky, each change adding to a slow accumulation of clues. What stopped her next was a knot of fibres in the hemp rope—a small frustration in the mechanism, neither soft nor forgiving. Her perception of the rhythm altered; the thud now sounded like two blows, close together. If the belt were any looser, the stone would spin free, yet the belt sagged only by the width of a fingertip.

Her knuckles whitening, she loosened a wooden peg, slid it out, and reached for a mallet stored beneath the hopper. The tool’s handle felt slick where countless palms had rubbed it smooth since the spring equinox, when damp air first crept through the shutters. She tapped the peg’s end; grain trickled, the rope twitched, the thud softened. Seldom had the mill responded so quickly. She paused, listening, then pressed an ear to the beam. No sooner had the water outside struck the lowest paddles than a gentler clatter echoed above her head, somewhere among the rafters she had not checked.

Vera hesitated, mallet still in hand. The earlier flour trail now looked purposeful, as though guiding eyes upward rather than marking careless movement. She climbed the narrow ladder. Dust lay thick on the upper planks, yet a fresh bootprint cut through it, crisp as if pressed minutes ago. Her pulse counted the wheel’s turns while she tried to decipher the pattern: one print, a gap, then another facing the opposite direction. A shifting load, perhaps? She braced a shoulder under the beam and lifted—grain bags had been wedged there, their weight damping the shaft. With effort and a grunt, she rolled them aside.

The wheel below found new freedom; the hollow thud vanished, replaced by an even splash and a faint wooden hum. She remained among the rafters, fingertips tracing the empty space where the bags had rested, cool air brushing her sleeve as flour dust drifted through the broader light now slicing in from the windows.
