The Dent That Opened Downward-

English 原文
Zane brushed grit from a shallow oval dent, damp earth scent rising where the tool stroked the stone. Rarely had the plateau smelled so alive; char, resin, and iron mingled as the midday heat coaxed vapors from each stratum. A thin slate band slid over pale limestone like an eclipse across a bright disk, and he worked at its margin while Lena arranged chisels in a canvas roll behind him.
Tiny paired pits became visible, lining the dent like a loosened stitch along cloth. The two spent minutes in quiet rhythm—brush, pause, breathe—while the wind carried dry grit that tapped the tool handles. His fingers still dusted with ochre, Zane leaned closer. What caught Lena’s breath was a faint seam at the dent’s edge: the odor shifted toward sweet rot, a harbinger of softer deposits below. If the layer were any thinner, daylight would pierce it; their quixotic cataloging of every scratch usually stirred only catalog numbers, yet something in the seam held them.
Zane wedged a rounded pick beneath the slate, hesitated, then rocked it forward millimeter by millimeter. The rock flexed with a muted creak and released a flake no larger than a coin. Beneath, the oval widened, revealing concentric ripples rather than claw impressions. He straightened, wiped sweat with the back of his wrist, and exchanged a glance with Lena—silent friction in that glance, the earlier certainty already eroding. She nudged loose powder aside; no spoor radiated outward, no slipping mud froze mid-step. The pattern looked less like a footfall than the compressed throat of a burrow. A mole tunneling through wet clay might have collapsed the roof, leaving this ringed hollow long before mud turned to stone.
Only by tilting a flask so that water beaded over the surface did the full outline sharpen: the ripples curved inward, not outward, marking a push from below. The oval dent from the first stroke was suddenly a doorway, and the paired pits showed where fur brushed the roof while the animal turned. Zane exhaled, resin-tinged air passing his lips in a slow ribbon. Without a word, he slid the brush back to the original dent and coaxed the next crumb of slate from its place.
