English 原文
Troy pushed through the streaked glass door, warm air squeezing past his shoulders as though the room exhaled. The entry mat sagged, its edge frayed into small curls that brushed his shoes. Fluorescent tubes hummed overhead, their glow reflected on rows of metal cabinets whose surfaces carried a blotched patina of detergent spills and long-evaporated steam. Seldom had the plastic chairs looked so weary: one leg on each rattled when he brushed them. At the far end a dryer wheezed, its round window fogged, the drum’s rhythm faintly out of step with the others.
Her coins already lined on his palm, he moved toward a vacant machine. A pulsating washer beside it shook, its door gasket sagging like over-boiled rubber. If the gasket were intact, the load would rotate smoothly. He slipped a coin into the dryer slot; it stopped halfway, meeting a sticky quagmire of lint and hardened gum. Troy pressed twice more, then withdrew his fingers, gray threads clinging to his nails. Hardly had the coin jammed when a flicker of distress crossed the washer’s timer— digits froze, then blinked back to life. The accumulating clicks, the gum, the flashing numbers: each small hitch stacked against quiet waiting.
He inhaled, squared his shoulders, and tried a gentler angle. Coin edge to metal edge, he nudged until a faint give replaced resistance. Only then did the coin slide inside and the drum lurch awake. What stopped him from walking away was the new sound inside— a dull thump repeating every third spin. Troy hesitated, fingers hovering over the pause button. Patience pays off in places like this, he reminded himself, yet the unexpected cadence pressed on his ears. He opened the door mid-cycle; heat rushed out and a red scarf, someone else’s, dangled from the drum’s fin like an abandoned instrument still vibrating with a last note. He freed it, draped it on a nearby chair, and restarted the cycle, this time without protest.
Minutes later the blanket emerged warm but not quite dry, corners cool where the fabric had bunched. The scarf remained on the chair, its fringe motionless under the light. Troy folded his things quickly; one damp sleeve darkened the canvas of his bag. As he stepped outside, a single bead of water slid from the sleeve’s edge and tapped the pavement, leaving a small, dark circle behind him.
