The Frost That Stilled the Wind-

English 原文
The sharp tang of wet iron drifted from the rain-gauge posts. An ibex lifted its head beyond the low fence, steam curling from its nostrils and catching the first amber shard of dawn.
Cole’s morning routine felt fixed as rock; he grasped the anemometer mast, expecting the cups to spin freely, yet frost had crusted their pivots. Rarely had the ridge looked so close; low cloud pressed around the station like a gray curtain, softening every edge. Instruments hinted at rising pressure, but the unmoving cups told another story, so he noted both figures, pencil tapping the page in a steady rhythm. Behind him, the ibex stepped sideways, hooves cracking the thin glaze over puddles; the sound echoed through the hush and wove itself into his numbers.
Notebook open, he walked toward the louvered thermometer box, intent on another reading, but wind shifted and brushed light across the plexiglass roof. What caught his breath was the sudden quiver of the ibex’s ears; reflections slanted from metal panels and flickered over its tawny hide. Only when the light faded did Cole notice the solar console’s screen dulling—power down had begun earlier than scheduled, draining the data buffer mid-record. He paused, one boot half-raised, calculation halted by the simple presence of an animal that belonged to crags, not to instruments. Beyond the ridge, the vast metropolis remained unseen, yet its glow tinted the underside of the clouds, reminding him why these numbers traveled down the valley each night.
Scarcely had the backup switch clicked before he stopped again. The ibex nosed the frost-rimmed basin under the wind vane; water glittered where its breath warmed a patch of ice. Cole reconsidered the frozen cups: perhaps weight, not wind, kept them still. He lifted a glove, tapped the hub gently, and a sugar crust of ice broke away, letting the cups turn one slow circle. Awareness unfolded—his certainty about calm air eroded by a single flake of frost and a mountain goat’s quiet witness. As though the ridge were glass, light now refracted from spinning blades onto the ibex’s eyes. Cole closed the notebook without finishing the line and stepped back, watching the creature nibble at the thawed rim.
