English 原文
Blake swept glowing flakes of slag toward a waiting scoop, and a pale, silken thread drifted across the hot air and settled on the dark iron plates. Its presence felt out of place amid hammer clangs and furnace roar, so he paused, letting the broom bristles hover while the filament quivered in the rising heat. Each puff from the bellows sent tiny vortices that spun the thread like a dancer. Behind it, fine claw prints stitched the dust, the marks too small for any shop cat. A bead of sweat rolled past his brow, vanished before reaching his collar, and the heady scent of scorched oil carried the thread farther into the maze of rails.
Other oddities followed. A charcoal flake shaped like a minuscule wing lay beside the next anvil; beyond that, a downy tuft no larger than a thumbprint clung to the rivet bucket, trembling with every piston pulse. Neither scrap alone demanded attention, yet their unity arranged a silent rhythm; he tapped his boot in time, the motion steadier than the foreman’s whistle. Hardly had the blower cycled when a flick of gray-white darted above the cranes—too quick for certainty, but a chickadee silhouette fitted the glimpse. Nowhere among the crossbeams could he spot it again, so the broom rested against a pillar while he tilted his head, tracking the restless eddies that betrayed another flutter.
He climbed the narrow ladder bordering the furnace wall; every rung radiated warmth that forced short, careful grips. If the railing were cooler, his progress would have quickened. Halfway up, he hesitated, glancing back toward the cooled molds stacked below—break time thinning—but the faint sweep of powder from an unseen wing renewed his ascent. On the catwalk, a retired ladle lay overturned. He rolled it upright, and inside shimmered an intricate bowl: silken threads, brass swarf, two bright scales from a yellowfin lunch, and a single brown feather finer than smoke. The pieces, woven tight, rocked gently with the floor’s vibration, and the meaning of the first loose thread inverted itself like a mould turned out.
A soft cheep sounded overhead; a sparrow—slighter than his palm—alighted on a beam, eyeing the nest then him. Blake’s boot shifted, metal grating louder than intended, and the bird flinched but held its perch. For a breath he weighed lifting the nest downstairs where breezes flowed, before choosing a simpler course. His glove wrapped around a nearby window crank; glass swung outward, letting cooler daylight pulse across the catwalk. Remaining crouched, he nudged the ladle toward the light until the silken weave caught a pale glow. The sparrow dipped its head, and he withdrew his hand, resting the warmed ladle on the sill’s brick lip.
