Beside the shallow trough left by yesterday’s rake, a palm-sized rock waited, its grainy surface mottled like cooled clay. Further back, a pair of pruning shears rested against the low wooden wall. One blade was dark with sap, the other caught a pale glint. No footstep disturbed the rectangle; only the murmur of distant water pipes threaded the hush and mingled with the percussive tick of unseen insects. Seldom did the garden carry so many sounds at once, yet none rose above a whisper.

Rafe stepped onto the wooden veranda, sandals muting his entrance, head tilted to catch the garden’s quiet rhythm. From that vantage he watched the leaf revolve, stop, and revolve again, as though deciding where to come to rest. Two sparrows landed on the mossed wall and seemed to converse in brisk chirps before darting off. Three weeks earlier, a visiting horticultural therapist had spoken of listening before trimming, claiming that sound reveals what sight overlooks. He reached toward the dull stone, paused mid-motion, then withdrew to examine the pattern once more. The tiny facets catching light, he tipped the fragment and watched glitter spill across the gravel.

The revealed lattice mirrored the garden itself, ridges rising like frozen ripples. He considered shelving the geode with afternoon findings, yet the emptiness around it invited a different answer. He placed the brighter half in the broken crescent, letting gravel cradle the crystals. With slow strokes, the rake redrew every line, water-shapes folding toward the violet core and pausing by the settled leaf. He set the split geode among the new curves and stepped back to catch its faint shimmer.

走到那顆寂靜石旁，碎石線條因小礫移動而顫抖，弧形破壞了先前的對稱。他蹲下，拇指掃過受擾的痕跡，感到比平常更粗糙的砂粒。他伸手欲捧石，又在半空停住，重新打量紋路。楓葉再度摩擦碎石，細小提醒讓他回身；他夾住石緣，將它提起。石底乾淨斷開，上半部在掌中旋開，露出一圈淡紫水晶。微小晶面捕捉光線，碎光如雨落在白礫上。

那晶簇如凍結漣漪，正映著整座庭園。拉夫原想把這顆晶石放到架上，但四周的空隙邀請另一種安排。他將較亮的半塊擺入破裂弧線，讓碎石托住晶體。耙齒緩慢掃描，新線條如水波向紫色核心聚攏，在靜止的楓葉旁停頓。拉夫把裂開的晶石安置在新生曲線間，退後一步，凝視那淡淡閃光。
