English 原文
From his place near the wicker wall, Glen watched Zara test the burner’s slim lever; every squeeze sent a blue cone upward and turned the envelope above them into a glowing lantern. Shadows of the rigging stretched across her sleeve, then vanished when the hiss stopped. A dog barked far below, its thin yelp reaching the basket long after the mouth had opened. The ground looked like a quilt someone had forgotten to fold, neat fields stitched edge to edge. Glen noted how steady the air felt around his cheeks, a calm that raised one sharp question: would the flame stay that obedient all morning?
Seldom had the envelope glowed so evenly, and confidence clung to him like radiant heat. He knelt by a crate where jars rattled softly against spoons—leftovers from ongoing recipe development at his café. Taking the initiative, he unhooked a small steel pan and slipped it over the burner guard; steam curled from yesterday’s broth. Dried nettle tops, gathered during a dawn forage along hedgerows, waited in a muslin pouch. Salt, that humble kitchen staple, lay in a twist of wax paper. Overhead, the burner installation exhaled another measured roar, and warmth blossomed around their ankles as if the basket owned its own hearth.
What caught his eye was a dim orange waver that should have been bright; the flame thinned, coughed, and disappeared. Silence, complete and strange, fell between them and the sky. Glen’s hand hovered, then shifted from sight to touch—he closed his eyes, spreading fingers toward the pan’s rim. The metal still carried a gentle blush of heat, enough to finish the brew if tended with care. His fingers chilled, he lengthened each breath, sensing pockets of warmth drift upward while cooler drafts slid along the floorboards. Zara tapped the fuel gauge once, yet said nothing; the hiss did not return.
Had the air been thicker, the basket would have dipped at once; instead it settled by slow inches. Glen loosened the vent rope, letting a ribbon of hot air escape, and the fields below drifted closer. He scraped the remaining nettles into the broth, swirled the pan, and waited until the scent deepened. A sudden jolt—hardly more than the bounce of a step—tilted the crate, and the muslin pouch slipped over the edge. It twirled downward, pale against the green, shrinking quickly. Glen ladled the soup into two metal mugs. Steam gathered around their knuckles while the abandoned pouch spun through cool morning light.
