Wheat Ear in the Molten Ladle-

English 原文
Steam pulsed around Tara’s gloves as she lowered a battered ladle into the crucible, orange light shimmering across her visor. The foundry breathed like a furnace-bound beast; every exhale of flame rippled the air with quivering heat. Outside, a downpour drummed on the metal roof, each strike swallowed by the hiss of molten iron. A faint golden aura clung to the liquid surface, promising the precise cog she intended to cast before the shift ended. A row of cooling ingots lined the wall, their dull skins recalling the village’s talk of a plentiful harvest once the fields matured. Heat shimmer blurred distant railings, hiding tiny fractures that had been there for years.
She tipped the mould half-open, and a thin fissure zigzagged across the sand, releasing a puff of dark grit. Frustration rolled through the workshop in the scrape of tongs against benches; nowhere in the damaged flask could she glimpse an intact channel. Were the alloy any cooler, it would harden midair, yet holding the pour now risked solidifying dross along the ladle’s lip. Hand hovering, she set the vessel on a brick, then wiped her visor, the gesture leaving a smear that lined up with an old dent on the bowl. Condensation from the roof traced the same dent, and, under the orange glow, it resembled a wheat ear pressed into steel.
Toolbox unlatched, she chose a slender steel rod and pressed the rod’s rounded tip into the fissure, widening it just enough for a controlled flow. Hardly had the rod withdrawn when stray droplets from the downpour sizzled on the mould, sealing grains of sand into a tighter weave. She lifted the ladle again; the dent, once a flaw, now aligned with the ear-shaped seal, turning an accident into an ornament inside the new cog. Metal streamed, settled, and stilled; tranquility hovered near the cooling bath where faint steam drifted like breath finally let out. By the time the crucible dimmed, the ladle’s rim sagged out of round, and she laid it aside, warmth fading across its darkening steel.
