Tiny movements piled up. First, a single droplet slid along the rope, hesitated, then plunged to the ground. Next, the cedar post gave a barely visible quiver, the dew-slick grain refusing to grip the knot. What troubled her was the nearly inaudible creak that lingered after she stepped back, an echo with no clear source.
