Hazel lifted the shuttle and felt its weight shift, as though a tiny stone rolled inside the hollow handle. Tilting it toward the light, she caught a glint wedged near the eye—something nugget-small, unexpectedly bright. The loom thrummed when her elbow brushed the taut warp, a low pulse travelling through the wooden frame. Dust particles spun through the glare, colliding, separating, then settling on the shuttle like powdered gold. A pale wedge of sun edged across the wall, lifting motes in stages and tinting the raw wool copper.

She set the shuttle aside and ran a finger along the weft; the golden speck winked back from the groove. Only then did the cloth reveal a faint buckle, barely wider than a thread, curving under the window’s oblique glare. Hazel plucked the speck, expecting loose fiber, yet the shard resisted, bound by resin that once sealed the shuttle tip. Her knuckles white, she slackened the tension beam, hoping the grip would ease before resin stripped more colored wool. Slack appeared, yet the buckle deepened, and the warp closest to the shard sagged in a tired arc. If the threads were looser, they would brush the foot pedal, catching grease from yesterday’s oiling. A hand’s breadth of cloth now shimmered unevenly, light jumping across ridges like a miniature tectonic shift under glass.

She considered fresh resin from a small metal flask that waited on the tool shelf, kept for mending splintered bobbins. A dab could rejuvenate the damaged tip, yet sealing it now might trap the shard forever against the cloth. Hazel exhaled through her teeth, hinged open the tension beam, and tightened the distant edge to optimize alignment. Wood groaned; a high thread snapped, and the loom’s hum died, replaced by a brittle ringing in the rafters. She rested a palm on the frame, eyes tracing the fresh gap that glowed white where dye once flowed. Leaving the gap bare meant the pattern might drift, while threading a new strand threatened to strain the remaining weave. She trimmed the broken ends clean, left the shard embedded, and eased the beam until the cloth lay almost level.
