Every Monday at eight, Cruz settled before the back-bench lamp, palms already smelling of resin and metal. Today, however, the first tick from the wall clock arrived half a beat early, shrinking the usual leisure between sound and hush. Rarely had the shop sounded so hollow. He rotated a travel alarm, its casing rasping against his fingertips, and screws chirped against the driver like distant crickets. Beside the vise waited a dented copper urn, glaze chipped where countless fingers once lifted it; its lid resisted immediate negotiation, so he turned instead to the clock. A parcel changed hands with the driver, tyres groaned away, and the street settled again. A small bell above the frame rang once, thin and metallic, then stilled. Cold exhaust clung to the pavement, while a pale ridge line of clouds slid eastward above the flat roof, stealing the light for an instant. Returning through the doorway, he paused. What halted him was the silence that waited beyond the lamp’s circle, every clock seemingly aware of the lapse. The iron’s tip had cooled; the travel alarm’s minute hand now rested against a scratch he had never registered, scratch meeting scratch like threads on a faded map.

The bench still warm, he seated himself; fingers hovering, he noticed the scratch continuing around the casing, a thin route racing toward its inevitable conclusion at the hinge. Solder stiff now, he lifted the loupe and traced the path, finding at each quarter-turn a finer mark, the way rain grooves deepen on soft stone. The pattern had always been there, merely drowned by routine glare. Were the light lower, the marks might have merged; instead they stood clear—a quiet record of decades, of hands winding springs too tight. The lid yielded without drama, and the clock’s spring exhaled a dry sigh; the adjacent urn rocked ever so slightly, as though sharing the relief. He set the unopened parcel upon the shelf, picked up the driver, and the floorboard near the door answered with a single wooden creak before resting again.
