Weight of the Small Bison-

English 原文
A dark, wet footprint stained the warm oak plank just inside the rope walk, the print gleaming where the midday light struck it. No shower had passed, and the floor, polished by years of retreating footsteps, normally stayed bone-dry; yet moisture cooled the air around the mark, raising a faint thread of mist that drifted toward the clerestory windows. Max crouched, letting his palm hover above the chill patch, then straightened and tugged the leather apron tight against his coat. Rarely had the shed carried such a contrast—heat radiating from the spinning frame while an island of cold sat silent on the wood.
He set the monumental cast-iron axle turning; each click of the brass ratchet chased another ripple of twist along the three growing strands. Friction warmed his fingers, but the damp plank continued to glisten, and now a second blemish—an oval ring of moisture—bordered the first. A bouquet of dried lavender and rye, hung months earlier above the workbench to tame the raw hemp smell, shivered as the draft shifted, scattering brittle petals across the forming rope. If the plank were truly soaked, the fibres would have swollen already, so he wiped the surface with a spare rag, only to leave loosened threads clinging to the yarn.
Those stray threads soon jammed the wooden cone; the top stalled, and tension sagged. What hindered the twist was not the water at all, but the lint his own cleaning had introduced—a revelation that arrived when he felt the sudden slack pulse through the rope and saw the cone tilt. Glove tucked under his belt, he hesitated, weighing whether to unwind everything or to coax the cone forward. A small carved bison used as a counterweight caught his eye; its dense maple flank still stored yesterday’s warmth. He lifted it, clipped it to the sagging strand, and the added mass urged the cone into motion again, though the rope now bore an uneven ridge—newfound proof that perfection and progress rarely knot together.
The finished coil settled near the frame, warmth seeping from its centre while lavender petals dotted the outer loops. Steam thinned, drifted upward, and vanished against the sunlit rafters. At the open doorway, Max raised the small bison weight and set it on the sill.
