English 原文
A green sprig lay against the pale hemp on Wren’s leather apron—how had a cooking garnish wandered sixty metres down the rope walk? She brushed it aside, yet its scent of crushed rosemary clung to her sleeve while the first hook began to turn. Ratchet clicks rolled along the shed, each one bright against the deeper creak of tensioned strands. Light poured in slanted bars, and every footstep she took backward sent dust humming across the floorboards. Nowhere along the cedar rafters could she see an opening wide enough for leaves to drift through, so the presence of that herb sounded a quiet riddle under the steady hum of the spinning frame.
At the open doorway a kitchen boy balanced a metal platter piled with bread; breeze ruffled the cloth, sending more rosemary needles skating down the walk. Voices outside floated after him in a murmur of debate about whether pepper or thyme dressed soup better, the words dissolving long before they reached Wren’s ears. The fresh flecks tangled with loose fibres, and her thumb still tingling, she plucked at them one by one. Each pause let twist race ahead, so the strands tightened unevenly; the ratchet’s usual algorithm—click, step, breathe—broke its rhythm, leaving two extra turns fighting the rest. The rope began to ripple, a faint wave visible where light crossed it.
Hardly had she leaned back to equalise the pull when the entire length answered with a sharp twang that startled a nesting sparrow from the eaves. She stopped. With strands humming like taut strings, what settled between the twisted fibres was a single green fleck she had missed; the imperfection stood out, yet touching it again risked another surge of torque. She exhaled, spread her stance, and adopted a new cadence: two short steps, one long, a slight roll of her wrist after every second click. The pattern resembled a patient data structure being re-balanced—small adjustments distributed rather than forced at one point.
The tension evened, leaving the rope smooth though still dotted by a whisper of rosemary. Wren unhooked the finished length, coiled it, and walked toward the doorway where afternoon light gathered. Behind her the shed kept its own counsel: the frame stopped, the ratchet rested at an odd angle, and dust swirled lazily around the abandoned cone. On the floor, the completed coil lay warm, strands uniform, a few green needles pressed under the outer loop. Near the threshold, the metal platter stood where the boy had set it, cloth askew, crumbs and herbs scattered like tiny compass points across the wood.
