Serenity hovered over the layered rock; even the wind paused, leaving a silky veil of dust to hang unmoving above Sage’s hands. Dale had mapped these strata last spring and knew the lines of ochre, grey, and rust the way others knew a garden path.

Hardly had he knelt beside her when the hush of bristles altered pitch, as though the stone answered in a lower register. Sage continued, letting that sound sustain her rhythm, yet Dale’s head tilted, listening for the change. The boundary between two layers, once sharp, now blurred under accumulations of sun and grit. He traced it with a fingertip; grains slipped away in a tiny cascade, each slide punctuated by the brush’s muted scrape, scrape, scrape. Three times the sound deepened, and on the third Dale set his own brush down, its wooden handle tapping rock with a hollow click that refused to echo.

Her shadow angled across the strata, brush poised; his hand hovered above the surface, then withdrew. A line of minute pits stretched farther than he remembered, following the curve of a long-buried shell. Were the chisel struck harder, the imprint would crumble, so he kept tools idle and leaned close instead. The pits repeated every few centimetres, a rhythm he had missed, yet the bed had been singing it all along. Each tiny cavity caught morning light, and together they seemed to convey the rippled outline of an ancient shoreline—nothing new uncovered, only something long present finally seen. Dale exhaled, the sound matching the breeze that resumed and rattled a loose pick against stone.

He brushed once, softly, then stepped back, leaving the line untouched. The hush returned to its earlier cadence, Sage matching it without a word while Dale gathered his tools into the canvas roll. Dust settled behind him, filling the faint indent his knee had pressed. On the exposed layer, the shell’s curve lay unbroken; the pits glimmered like scattered beads before the wind shifted again and carried a thin crust of ochre grains across the newly bright edge.
