He lifted the smoker; a feather of gray drifted outward and dissolved in the sun, but the strange note lingered. Wade slid a thin blade and cut away the section, resin sticking to his gloves. Amber dripped, bees shifted, hum rising then settling when the smoker’s last curl drifted back. The fix stole honey, but it spared the comb’s moral integrity.

The sun pressed lower as Wade stepped away, frame trimmed, edges clean. On the bench, the discarded shard cooled, sticky and dark where rust still flavored the wax. Nearby, the smoker lay sideways; ash spilled in a gray crescent that caught the light. One bee explored the empty bellows, antennae tracing soot.
