English 原文
The sun-baked scent of quartz grated against Wade’s throat as he paused on the knife-edge crest. A breath of wind skirted his boots, the sand beneath him trembled, grains cascaded over the lip, and, with the shift, a concealed reed sprang upward, began to oscillate, and released a low, cello-like drone. Never before had Wade heard sand hum like tensioned wire, so he crouched, watching each new trickle shove the reed faster, then settle when the slide ceased. The dune, it seemed, stored a mechanism written in moving particles rather than gears.
He followed the vibration along the ridge, boot prints already blurring, until another gust set a second reed singing a higher note. Between them meandered a finger-thin groove channeling sand like water in a fleeting stream. His sandals sinking slightly, he bent closer; tiny quartz shards flashed amber in the midday glare, marking pulses where the channel deepened. Partway along, the ground sank farther, revealing a narrow opening plunging down the rabbit hole of a desert hare. Each time wind funneled through that burrow, the adjacent reed quivered, as though the dune itself breathed through hidden pipes.
He reached for the nearest slat, then hesitated when his shadow dulled its shimmer; the tone faltered, and silence perched on the ridge. Only after shifting sideways did the note return, stronger, joined by ripples of light darting over the packed windward face. A line of half-buried pebbles marked intervals beside the groove, and with every fresh gust, the pitched chorus climbed another step, a quantum leap beyond the first solitary drone. The accumulated songs crowded the thin air until the dune thrummed like an enormous lyre—no single reed mattered now; together they turned shifting sand into music.
Curiosity pricked again. Were the reeds mere scraps of broken sage, or had someone arranged them? He pinched one stem and pulled; a rope of dried fiber began to unwind beneath the surface, drawing more slats from hiding. What stopped him was the abrupt sag of the crest: grains poured over his boots, the harmonies collapsed, and the long groove vanished under a fresh skin of glittering dust. Wade stepped back, allowing the buried instrument to rest unseen, the lone surviving note drifting into the valley below. He turned toward the descending slope and pressed his heel into the firm windward sand.
