English 原文
The spare lap belt lay already fastened across the fiberglass seat beside Tara, its metal tongue locked although no one occupied the moulded space. Water marks, the colour of tarnished pewter, curved around that emptiness and caught the daylight in dull rings. A faint chlorine smell drifted through popcorn sweetness from a cart beyond the fence, while the boat nudged the guide rail with a hollow tap. Rarely had the current sounded so measured, every pulse against concrete steady as a metronome hidden below the murals. Tara shifted her weight, noticing the unused belt still shining unwaveringly beside her in the slanted sun.
The channel bent into the first tunnel, and coloured lights dimmed until painted scenes glittered across damp walls. A procession bearing lanterns arched overhead, the artwork recalling a lantern festival caught mid-stride, each brushstroke softened by years of fine mist. Bells chiming from hidden speakers, a recorded lullaby threaded through the passage and echoed against fiberglass. As though the channel were a slow moving clock, every gentle scrape arrived exactly between the lullaby’s phrases. Near her knees a flaking image showed a silver goblet tipped on its side, wine replaced by a streak of rust that trailed toward the waterline. Tara traced that stain with a fingertip held just above the surface, then withdrew when spray collected on her skin.
Light returned as the boat glided outside, passing daffodil heads nodding beyond the rail where sprinkler overspray had coaxed them into early bloom. Her sketchbook lay across her lap, pages swelling slightly from moisture that kept seeping between the fibres despite her careful grip. She lifted one corner to check a charcoal drawing, paused, and pressed the sheet flat again when the hull rocked against another guide post. The lift chain engaged beneath the keel and began its clanking climb toward the final slope. When the crest arrived, Tara’s free arm crossed instinctively toward the empty seat, yet she drew it back before touching the belt. Water hurled upward in a brief fountain; the buckle popped open with a metallic snap, revealing that only tension, not intention, had held it closed. Spray settled over her arms like a cool veil, and the sketchbook edges curled harder along their damp grain.
After the splashdown the boat drifted into the calm basin, rolling gently under pennants that cracked in the breeze and flopped again. Sunlight reflected off thousands of droplets clinging to the hull, turning each flake of chipped paint into a small, shifting mirror. The recorded melody still played, yet the lullaby now sounded faint, almost lost beneath the soft machinery of pumps below the dock. Tara gathered her sketchbook, noticed how the pages had freckled, and breathed across the charcoal to keep particles from smearing. A crew member steadied the gunwale, but she waited, watching the liberated belt sway and tap the seat in an irregular rhythm. She stepped onto the dock and pressed the buckle back into place, the metal clicking once against her palm.
