Kent flicked the thermal overlay, paused, then toggled back—an uncharacteristic stutter that left his fingers hovering above the plastic. Only then did the joystick feel unfamiliar, its rubber slightly tackier, as though replaced during some windstorm he had missed. Thumbs still tingling, he set the controller down and stepped outside the shelter. Canvas slapped the pole; the missing weight declared itself in the tilt of fabric and in the shifting shadow that crawled across the table. He guided the drone lower. Branches splayed outward where gusts once sheared younger trunks, their scars aligning into a broad arrow that pointed across the valley. The more he traced the pattern, the clearer it formed—an avenue shaped long ago, unnoticed because it hid in plain symmetry. Seldom had the station felt so still; distant rotors murmured, while close at hand the sagging canvas whispered against its frame.
