The viewing deck lay in bright honey-amber light, but the hollow inside the red panda’s oak log stayed dark. Fresh varnish on the railing gleamed beside older strips where visitors’ elbows had rubbed the wood pale ochre over many seasons. Gravel crackled as Sara shifted her weight, one palm spread on the warm rail and her eyes fixed on the quiet shelter.
She aimed to glimpse the panda before the afternoon feeding show began. First, she leaned into the public binoculars; the brass tube felt hot from the sun, yet the glass only framed tangled bamboo. A fine haze from nearby mist sprayers drifted across the lens and blurred everything. She wiped the rim with her sleeve, but the animal remained unseen. A facilitator guiding a school group paused behind her, rolling a cart of leaf-shaped puppets for an upcoming craft, yet even the children’s soft chatter failed to stir the dormant creature. When the group moved on, Sara noticed a collapsible stool folded beside an info panel. She unfolded it, climbed on, and lifted the binoculars a notch higher. The new angle revealed a conservatory roof beyond the enclosure; its copper sheets caught the sun, glowing like molten caramel, while the log still looked empty.
Minutes slipped by. Somewhere deeper in the habitat, dry leaves rustled, then a striped tail flicked for a heartbeat and vanished again. Sara sighed, folded the stool, and decided to reach the feeding platform early. As she stepped off the deck, a sudden blur of turquoise and bronze flashed near ground level: a peacock had wandered onto the pathway, tail feathers dragging golden dust across the stones. It strutted past her shoes and headed toward the parents’ benches, as if the zoo itself chose to evolve the afternoon’s plan without warning. Sara turned, amused by the unexpected escort, and walked toward the plaza. Behind her, warm mist threaded through the leaves above the emptier path.
