The rim of a ceramic plate grazed Fern's sleeve as she lifted the warm, smooth tray higher. Several dishes had been balanced on a narrow bar counter, their edges barely touching the grooved rubber mat. Kane reached for a glass, nudged a spoon, and an entire stack of small saucers slid outward. The top saucer tapped the next, passing a quick shiver through the smooth column. That tap pushed against a mustard jar, which tipped and poured a thick stream across the laminated counter.

The glossy flow crept toward the dining area aisle where Fern stood with cupcakes prepared for a birthday ceremony. She stepped back, but her shoe met the spreading mustard, and a slippery patch formed under her heel. Fern wobbled, gripping the tray; crumbs jumped and the frosting quivered like tiny jelly towers. A subtle nuance in surface texture—sticky in spots, glossy elsewhere—made each corrective step unpredictable. Instead, the bag struck a hanging ladle; metal clanged and toppled a pepper grinder. The grinder hit the floor, rolled against Fern’s ankle, then darted toward the doorway.
