Jude brushed past the glass counter, fingertips grazing its chilly edge as he located the polished steel utensil. A slow queue pressed forward on the rubber floor markings, shoes shuffling over the ridged strips. He aimed to claim four raspberry brioche rolls for the evening feast his cousins planned before their sister’s wedding rehearsal. The timer above the pass-through flashed red, and a tray of golden rolls slid onto the cooling rack. Fragrant steam lifted, mixing with the yeasty haze already hanging in the shop. Strategy-A was simple: stay in line and wait. Yet by the time two customers ahead completed orders, the fresh batch had been boxed, ribboned, and whisked toward the packaging station. Only crumbs shone under the light. Jude’s knuckles tightened around the tongs’ grooved handle; the first approach had left him empty-handed.

A new obstacle appeared when a chalk arrow on the specials board announced the next bake: lemon crullers, not the raspberry rolls he needed. Changing tactics, Jude stepped out of the queue, slid to the side panel, and noticed an unattended cart beside the open pantry door. The cart carried a shallow dish of sample brioche meant for tasting, each piece already sliced. He slipped the tongs beneath the warm segments, lifted four, and arranged them on a paper tray lined with wax. A metal scoop, still dusted with flour, lay nearby; Jude flipped it over, using its broad back as a makeshift lid to keep the glaze soft. When he rejoined the queue, a surprised child pointed at his improvised container, but no one objected; the line flowed on. The assistant finally reached him, boxed the rolls properly, and slid a strip of decorative cutlery stickers across the seal, noting that the shop mixed practical tools with playful style, part of its light French cuisine charm. Jude stepped away, wiping glaze from his thumb. Behind the counter, another tray eased forward on its rails, steam curling toward the ceiling.
