English 原文
The plank under Lily’s right palm felt grainy, and a thin, crescent-shaped stain cut across it like a quiet scratch. A few breaths later sunlight slid under the willow leaves, and the mark appeared coppery, as if an old hook had pressed there many summers earlier.
Lily crouched in the mid-dock shade zone while Grandpa baited his line two planks away. Between them sat a narrow bucket with the last soft pellets. A low band on the mooring post showed where the lake surface had rested before last month’s water shortage; dried mud beyond the reeds formed an arid landscape dotted with cracked reeds. She flicked her rod, and the float touched down cleanly, yet the reel spat a sudden loop. The line coiled into a small, perilous knot—a tight bird’s nest that could snap under strain. She had already loosened two turns when the float was carried toward the rope-wrapped post by a lazy swirl. If she had pulled harder, the knot would have locked and the drift would have sliced the line against the coarse rope.
She steadied the rod with her elbow, reached forward, and eased slack through the jumble until the worst twist unfolded. The rescue, however, had been paid for: each jerk had shaken the hook, and one gold pellet slipped free, vanished beneath dark water. Only two pellets remained. Grandpa glanced over. “High hopes for that knot,” he chuckled, lifting his own rod. Lily answered with a quick grin, then noticed the float brushing the post. A decision rose; she could yank it clear and risk losing the hook, or walk back and unwind it slowly. She chose the shore path. Walking the rod around the post demanded patience, yet the line unwrapped without damage. When she returned, the hook still glimmered but the pellet hung half-crushed—functional, imperfect.
Before recasting, she wiped dust from the mysterious stain. Numbers surfaced beside the curve: faded centimetres. The supposed scratch was once a measuring guide, proof of many new beginnings carved by earlier hands.
A grey heron, watching from the willow-root water zone, flapped low across the dock end and glided toward deeper water.
