Reed glanced at the wall clock; six minutes had already slipped from his strict thirty-minute frame.

To pass the pause, he lifted a magazine; its chrome framework pressed cool lines against his thumbs. A lone comb lay on a side tray, kept in quiet quarantine after slipping onto the floor earlier that morning. Earlier, the receptionist had explained that the old blow-dryer showed little tolerance for continuous heat and required brief rests.
