English 原文
Cool glass pressed against Zara’s palm. A moon-grey sugar glider clung upside-down beneath a plastic sheltering tree fixed near the roof of the display cage, its tail hanging like a pale rope. Vance stopped beside her, backpack brushing the steel-grey shelf; a smooth glass bead, his tiny memento from last winter’s hike, rattled inside the side pocket. Between the friends and the creature lay a quiet obstacle: the bars stood high, and the only step stool had already been taken by a child comparing bettas along the blue-lit aquarium aisle. The pouch sewn to the upper perch swung gently, touched by an air-vent draft; the motion made the glider sway, then fold itself into the felt as though retreating from a miniature precipice. Fresh tender leaves waited in a narrow cup clipped nearby, yet the animal tucked its head and vanished.
An abrupt chime sounded from the counter, and a staff member asked Vance to sign for a box of fish food; both friends followed her past rows of humming pumps toward the supply shelf section. The paperwork lasted only minutes, yet when they returned, the child with the stool had left and the ceiling lights had shifted to a cooler afternoon setting. During their absence, the pouch had been nudged outward; faint movement puckered its edge. Zara climbed the freed stool. From above she saw not one sugar glider but two: a second, smaller nose pressed forward, sharing the fabric doorway with the first. What she had taken for a single sleepy body was, in fact, a curled pair balancing inside the swaying pouch. She kept still, watching their synchronized breathing. On the nearest perch, a bronze-green cockatiel tilted its crown and tapped a sunflower seed onto the tin tray.
