English 原文
Maeve splashed through a puddle, brown water sliding over her boots and splattering Atlas’s trousers as they stopped before the fallen trunk. A bright column of daylight cut through the canopy gap, and the moss on top shone like wet velvet. The pair had planned to carry three small seed trays over the log to a drier clearing, where their class project—tracking fern growth—waited. At first the task looked easy: a row of branch stubs offered footholds, and only a thin percentage of the bark surface looked slick. Maeve pressed a thumb into the moss; it sank, then sprang back, showing a hidden lattice of dark bark underneath. Raindrops kept tapping, but the trunk still felt steady.
Five minutes later the scene had evolved. Rain gathered along the trunk, turning the green layer into a soapy slide. Each new drop deepened the mud at their feet. Atlas tried the nearest branch as a handhold; dormant buds dotted its length, and the wood cracked under his pull, dropping fibrous crumbs onto his sleeve. The unexpected snap sent both trays wobbling. Maeve steadied one, yet damp soil spilled from the other and vanished into the puddle. She glanced at the sky-hole; water now spilled straight through it like loose strings. Time for a smaller plan. She had packed twenty seedlings, but saving all no longer seemed possible. She scooped five of the strongest sprouts into one tray, pressed the soil tight, and slid the empty container onto the mossy shelf where it sagged, harmless and abandoned.
Atlas kept his balance while Maeve edged onto the trunk, knees bent, palms flat against the cool, springy carpet. The moss shifted, but the lighter load let her move low and slow, toes searching for bark ridges. Halfway across, a sheet of green slipped away, baring the damp lattice below and sending a fresh woody scent upward. She placed the rescued tray on the far side clearing, mud streaks marking her path. Behind her, rain continued to patter on the hollow shell of the discarded container.
