English 原文
"Hand up the short plank." Mabel called. She steadied both bare feet on the damp boards near the branch junction; the wood flexed, and beads of sticky sap clung to her palm as she braced against the trunk. Noel, standing below beside the toolbox, sifted through the remaining planks until he found one with edges already sanded smooth. A lull in the wind let the rope bucket rise without wobbling, yet the calm felt like borrowed time. Mabel had marked the plank’s length earlier, and the soft graphite line still showed despite the dew. She pressed the board across two rough limbs, raised her hammer, and drove the first nail. A sudden barrage of leaves slapped her shoulders as a gust returned; the plank slid half a hand-span sideways, twisting the nail against a hidden knot. The bent shank skittered through a gap and pinged against the metal bucket, which swung outward and thumped the rope ladder before slowing.
During the next quiet pocket, generosity arrived in the form of Noel’s second plank, a touch longer than needed. Mabel adjusted her stance, shifting one boot onto firmer bark so her weight countered the sway. She tried again, angling the new nail away from the knot, and this time the point entered softer grain. Another gust followed, lighter than the first, yet strong enough to nudge the suspended bucket; its rim tapped a dangling rung, then the ladder brushed the trunk, shaking loose a thin shower of dry bark. Valor belonged to stories about knights, she decided; on a tree, progress depended on timing. The fresh nail gripped steadily, and a second nail sealed the opposite end before the wind strengthened once more. That last push pinned the board flat, stopping the small chain of bumps from spreading farther.
By evening, empty rungs hung still against the bark, and the rope bucket rested against the grass below. A faint line of sawdust lay beneath the newly fixed plank, pale and unmoving in the long, level light.
