She had promised to finish before the sea-turtle demonstration, yet a stubborn film of water clung to one tile and kept the paste from sticking.

A short whistle broke her rhythm; her nephew Reed waved from the jellyfish corridor, pointing toward a drifting bell shape he wanted her to see. Wren set the trowel across the bucket and stepped away. During her absence a grackle slipped through the open terrace vent, its charcoal wings scattering warm flecks of sunlight across the basin. The bird pecked at the bright paste, then sprang back; its sudden hop startled two hermit crabs that began to slither toward safety. One shell knocked a rinsing cup from the ledge. The cup dropped into the pool, drifted over the drain grate, and water rose a finger’s width above the stone rim.

Wren returned as the amber surface trembled against the overflowing edge. The paste she had spread was ripped and scattered, and the bucket that had been steady now bobbed in the deepened water. She slid one boot against the slick floor for balance, eased the trowel under the floating cup, and lifted it clear. A thin stream hurried through the freed grate; the level sank back without noise. She left the cup upside down to dry, pressed fresh paste onto the remaining tiles, and nudged the bucket back to the railing. A slow current tugged the bucket that had been brimming with greens toward the grate and carried it in a quiet circle.
