Nina slid the slim plug across the oval table, and the dry-ink smell from the whiteboard floated between them. Grant guided the cable toward the projector, its fan spreading a warm plastic aroma that mixed with yesterday’s stale pastry still lingering in the room. He kneaded a small foam cube with two fingers; the cube’s slight tenderness pressed back against his grip while he inched the connector toward the port. A faint oscillation thrummed through the tabletop as the projector hummed, and the roasted scent drifting from the corridor signaled fresh coffee on the verge of finishing a brew. The lens alignment shifted only a fraction before the image froze, leaving half the slide dim across the screen.

The corridor phone rang, sharp and chemical like hot circuit boards. Grant stepped out, crossing air tinged with metallic tang from the printer area and the vinegar-sharp odor of a recently cleaned water cooler. Reception handed him a padded envelope; adhesive glue gave off a sour whiff as he signed for it. By the time he returned, the meeting room carried a dusty warmth. The projector fan had stopped, and quiet flakes of heat rose from the lens. Marker ink now smelled stronger without the earlier airflow, and the soft rubber scent of his foam cube had deepened during the short absence.

Grant crouched and rotated the projector stand, lowering his shoulders to match the cooler lens height. The contact pins had been warmed before his departure; now they felt dry and stiff, so he angled the cable downward and let its own weight encourage the joint. The lens moved a fraction again; this time the image widened instead of brightening. He leaned left, pressed a knuckle against the housing, and allowed the cooled plastic to guide the final angle. The slide finally covered the screen edge to edge. Grant unplugged the cable and slid it into his pocket. A faint burnt-dust odor hovered around the cooling lens.

葛蘭特蹲下，轉動投影機支架，讓肩膀降到已冷卻的鏡頭高度。離開前被加熱的接點此刻乾而僵硬，他於是將線往下壓，利用自身重量協助插牢。鏡頭再度微微移動，這回畫面向外展開而非增亮。他向左傾身，以指關節抵住外殼，讓變硬的塑膠指引最後角度。投影片終於鋪滿整個幕布邊緣。葛蘭特拔下線，塞進口袋。微焦的灰塵氣味仍繚繞在慢慢降溫的鏡頭周圍。
