English 原文
A clipboard covered in narrow handwriting, a pendant lamp that poured a round glare onto the host stand, and a lonely yardstick leaning against the wallpaper shared the entrance waiting area. Ben scanned the bright floor beyond the swinging kitchen door, hoping to reach an empty booth before the next wave of diners appeared. A server wiped plates under the heat lamp, each movement throwing short shadows across stainless-steel trays. The host glanced at the clipboard, nodded once, and raised a palm: the booth still needed wiping. Ben waited at the threshold, timing his shift forward with the busser’s return. When cutlery flashed beneath the overhead pendant, he stepped again, yet the server re-entered with another stack of saucers, and the space stayed blocked.
Light shifted as a family finished their meal; the pendant above their table dimmed when they stood. The host lifted the yardstick, measured the gap between chairs, and decided the table had to slide a finger’s width toward the wall. That unexpected check moved the booth back into the preparation queue. Thoughtfulness lived in the action—each table distance ensured safe passage for trays—but the adjustment added minutes. Ben breathed slowly, watching glare crawl across the polished tiles while staff realigned chairs. At last, the cloth passed once more over the surface, and crumbs no longer caught the light. The family who had waited ahead accepted an offer to sit outside in the sunlit courtyard, freeing the booth inside. A low hush fell as the host flipped the clipboard page and met Ben’s eyes. The pendant still threw a circle of brightness on the floor, and Ben was already lifting one foot toward that circle, crossing the threshold.
