English 原文
"Hold this stick," Owen called.
Faye handed the smooth, silver-grey driftwood to him and crouched beside the writing zone, the blue-tinged surface mirroring a strip of pale sky. From her open knapsack she pulled a second branch, thinner, better for detail. The tide line glimmered far off, yet each mild surge inched closer. She began tracing a winding street, adding banners and drums: a miniature parade marching across the damp plane. The packed sand accepted every groove as clearly as graphite on paper. Behind them, Mom sat on a striped blanket, a paperback angled toward the cool light. A tiny runnel crossed the field like a secret ditch, but its stream was no wider than a shoelace, so Faye ignored it and pictured last spring’s graduation ceremony while shaping an arch over the sandbox city.
A taller wave reached the runnel, and water hissed along it, then forked into her street drawing. The new channel had been carved by retreating flow only minutes earlier; now it carried a silver ribbon straight through the parade. Letters she had planned for a welcome sign tore apart, and the central arch began to tumble inward as the sand edges collapsed. Faye pressed her palm on the breach, yet the trickle slipped around her fingers and spread. She darted to the driftwood collection point, grabbed a thicker branch, and wedged it across the runnel. The impromptu dam forced the water sideways, where it seeped into footprints instead of rushing over her sketch. She shifted her knapsack two steps higher toward the dry border, then scraped missing lines again, though the replacement stick etched broader strokes that refused to match the earlier ones.
At the same moment, farther up the slope, Hugo arranged shells like children during recess, experimenting with the same widening water tongue that now slowed behind Faye’s barrier. A faint shimmer ran beneath his new tower, lifting the lowest shell, and grains of silver sand streamed down the gentle grade toward the returning sea.
