English 原文
Chilled moisture clung to Viola’s fingers as she lifted a spongy block of floral foam from the refrigerated display. Sweet cold air flowed around her sleeves, carrying a mix of peppery carnation, honey-like freesia, and the faint metallic tang of the cooler’s shelves. Bea stood beside the wrapping station where warmer, slightly yeasty aromas drifted from a nearby bakery box that someone had left open. The pair hoped to finish a night-sky bouquet: deep violet lisianthus dotted with tiny baby’s breath so the arrangement whispered of stargazing. Bea paused to savor the sugary scent of a stock flower, then twisted the nozzle of the spray bottle; a sharp herbal mist rose as droplets hit the foam. A single fluorescent tube gave a brief flicker above them, and that pale glimmer of light helped Viola cherish the deep colors while she anchored the first stems.
Warmth at the counter sped their hands, yet it also began to soften a bundle of white daisies waiting nearby. Their grassy smell grew heavier, almost sour, and the outer petals curled inward. Viola noticed the change as she pressed another cool stem into the foam; the once-firm daisy heads now bent like tiny umbrellas. Fixing the starry bouquet had stolen too many minutes from the daisies’ freshness. She nudged Bea, who slid the nearly finished arrangement aside and hurried the wilting bundle toward the open cooler. The door seal peeled with a soft pop, and cold, earthy air rolled out, but shelf space was tight; buckets crowded every corner, damp leaves brushing the temperature dial.
Viola trimmed the daisy stems shorter so they could squeeze into a half-filled vase still inside. Some buds remained above the chill line, yet their delicate apple-skin scent stayed brighter than before. The bouquet, now complete, carried faint bakery sweetness at its edge where warm air had touched it, and the daisies leaned slightly, cooled but not as crisp as morning stock. At the same hour, in the darker storage cooler, Ilsa lifted a new bucket of ice-blue irises, their fresh aroma spiraling through the narrow aisle.
