A lamp above the notice board cast honey light across them, showing tiny gold flecks inside the paper. June pinched the corner, pulled, and a strip lifted with a quiet rip that raised curious heads nearby. She turned the label under the lamplight; below the glue a patchwork of colored dots glimmered in haphazard clusters. They looked like confetti trapped for eternity between layers of thin fiber. A bittersweet breath of ink drifted from the stamp pads, mixing with the dusty aroma rising from cardboard piles nearby.

When her ticket number flashed, June carried her small parcel to the scale, intending to send it to Glen overseas. The clerk tapped the form and slid it back; the weight box was empty and one digit in the postcode was missing. He lifted two fingers in a small gesture toward the side table and turned to the next ticket. June stepped aside to the narrow table where tape residue made the laminate gritty under her wrists. Sunlight from the entrance window stretched copper stripes across the floor, over her shoes and the side table legs.

She had rewritten the addresses before, yet this time the dwindling labels forced tidy lines and careful spaces. Her second attempt reached the counter, but the scale now read forty-two grams above the limit. June paused, then peeled the shiny confetti label free and opened the box, removing a fist of crumpled tissue. The tissue had been added to look festive, a silent celebration that suddenly weighed too much for procedure. She pressed the flaps flat, closed the lid, and the display settled exactly on the allowed number. Ink from her pen soaked into the fresh label, and her thumbnail traced a shallow, shiny groove along its torn edge.
