English 原文
Three test flights had spiralled wide, so Alma tugged a new sheet from the bench and began another fold. A faint crack followed each crease, like dry twigs snapping on a path, and the paper soon carried a maze of sharp lines. Otto, farther down the slope with a stopwatch, tapped its metal case; the tap rang across the grass. Alma’s design had evolved since dawn: tighter wings, a slim fuselage, and now a heavy clip pinching the nose. When she launched, the plane hissed, dipped, and planted itself nose-first three paces short of the chalk circle. She hurried down, tried to pull the clip free, yet the clip bit so tightly that the paper fibres squealed in protest and refused to open.
While she worked, blades of grass intertwined around her ankles, their soft rustle covered by the distant murmur from children in the mezzanine hallway windows. She lifted the plane again; a rolling gust twisted from the left, adding a dynamic wobble to each loose sheet on the bench above. Alma pressed her thumb against the clamp; the added metal still refused to loosen. She flipped the plane, noticing the unwilling crease that had locked the right wing lower. Suddenly, her earlier miss triggered a chain: the lodged plane shook a hidden grasshopper; the insect sprang, nudging the ribbon, which had been tied to the wind stick earlier; the sudden flutter startled a small sparrow on the mezzanine rail, and the bird burst upward, its wings beating a sharp drum of air that knocked Alma’s pack of spare clips off the bench.
Alma caught the spilling clips with one hand, and the motion stopped the papers from sliding farther. The wing’s locked angle now looked useful; that same tilt could counter the shifting breeze. She mirrored the stubborn crease on the opposite side, then sent the craft from the adjustment stone. The plane sliced forward; balanced weight pressed its nose through the changing air, and the chalk circle echoed with a muted puff as the paper skimmed directly across its rim. Alma jogged to retrieve it, leaving a shallow score where the nose had scraped the powder. Tiny chalk grains still drifted above the groove, spinning in a thin, pale cloud along the grass.
