Two chopstick handles tapped against the warm windowsill, thin sounds rising over the afternoon hush. Where the sheet stretched tight across the lower glass, Ruby noticed a darker oval, a damp trace left by an earlier splash.

Sunlight poured through the upper pane, throwing high-contrast stripes across her forearms and turning every pulled fibre of fabric into a sharp ridge. In the cut-out box beside her elbow, cardboard foxes, boats, and a single ranunculus waited, their rims glowing where the glare touched them. Ian crouched on the audience side, and an adult nearby pressed a loose pin into the frame, producing a brief metallic ping.

When the cloud slid away, Ruby lifted a fox toward the sheet and Ian raised a tall tree; the two shadows merged into a thick shapeless blot. Ruby angled her wrist outward so the silhouettes might divide, yet the bright band on the glass tangled them again. She moved the fox nearer the pane; its outline grew crisper, yet the tree’s broad branches still filled half the sheet. A silent brotherhood took shape as they shifted breath by breath, each waiting for the other’s stick to give room. They had often collaborated on quiet drawings before, yet this restless light now demanded stricter timing. A slow cloud granted a brief intermission; the screen dimmed to grey as air slipped through the frame and cooled their hands.

Sunlight dipped lower, and the oval stain Ruby had blamed on water drifted across the fabric until it touched the fox’s paw. The kids exchanged no words; instead, Ian nudged his tree upward, framing the blot so it became a moon above the branches. Ruby breathed out and slid the ranunculus between them, its petals trimming the edges of that new moon with a lacy ring. The once-annoying overlap now formed a tiny night-garden, and laughter burst through the sheet, short and witty like a skipped stone. Ruby eased back, deciding to keep the fox steady while the sun finished its slow crawl across the pane. Outside, a sparrow hopped along the upper sill and pecked at a drifting scrap the draft carried from the shoebox.
