Beneath the forward arc, a smooth palm-sized plastic slab lay half buried among loose rubber pellets beside the mat. It had been pressed deep into the pellets by repeated footsteps, leaving a faint groove around its curved edge. Gemma crouched, her knees pressing into the springy surface while the warm grains compressed under her trainers and steadied her balance. She had picked plenty of forgotten toys before, yet this piece looked different, almost freshly dropped. A terrier named Sable waited, nose low, the thin leash brushing Gemma’s wrist each time the dog shifted weight.

She dusted soil from the slab and noticed four shallow walls around one side, almost like a mould for a square biscuit. Curiosity tightened her grip as she headed for the sandbox, its pale sand cooling the soles through her thin shoes. A red plastic shovel sat beside the wooden frame, and she hooked its handle to scoop sand into the mysterious slab. When she flipped it over, the shape crumbled at once; the dry sand scattered like salt across her knees. Gemma narrowed her stance, pushing weight through her heels, and pressed the shovel’s back against the mould a moment longer. That first try yielded only a flat patch, yet the small failure offered insight: the toy needed firmer packing, not extra water.

While she worked, two younger children had a mild dispute over a yellow sieve, their tugging footprints circling the far corner of the box. Sable pressed her muzzle against Gemma’s ankle, a silent companion whose calm weight felt like a rope anchoring Gemma’s balance. Trusting that bond, Gemma paused; if the next scoop stayed packed, the small shape would finally hold. She then shifted both knees deeper, packed a second scoop, and rocked the mould from side to side before lifting. The sand kept its outline this time, and sunlight traced a curved back across the small shape. Only then did Gemma recognise the slab as a whale mould rather than a piece from the climbing frame. She tapped the shovel against the frame to shake off sand, then placed the tool on the wooden edge beside her knee.
