A crescent ridge, a round sun, and a sleek narwhal silhouette had been glued to sticks earlier; the pieces now lay inside a shoebox whose dusty interior hinted at old pepper. Seth lifted the ridge first, but the mirror view confused him; his left hand moved right, yet the valley shadow slid left, smudging the sun into a dark blot. He twisted his wrist higher in a slow, hesitant pivot. If he moves the ridge any nearer, its outline will dive off the sheet entirely, so he lowers it again without success.

While he recalculated, a hidden pin behind the upper corner popped free with a metallic ping, and the fabric sagged, giving off a faint iron whiff. The adult nearby, Rosa, tapped the loosened pin back into the frame with a soft-faced mallet that smelled like brand-new rubber shoes, yet the gentle knock jostled the shoebox, tipping the narwhal puppet onto the warm sill. Seth had practised balancing shapes, but the sliding afternoon sun had already stretched every outline downward until the valley became a tilted ramp. He dropped to one knee, pushed the stick lower, and angled the cardboard so the elongated ridge met the fold, drawing a sharp horizon. Then he let the narwhal dive across that edge, its pointed shadow swimming through the improvised channel. The show continued, and when he finally withdrew, a stray beam struck a crumpled cellophane scrap and left a tiny rainbow trembling on the sheet beside the fading valley.
