Delia’s canvas shoes already scraped a half-moon in the scuffed landing zone when Kane tapped his walking stick against the sun-warmed plank. He lowered himself onto the high end, and the wood tilted, honey-toned grains glowing while Delia’s side dropped with a cushioned thud. That bump tossed a palm-sized beetle from a strip of drifting sand; the insect, startled, scuttled toward the fulcrum. A sparrow perched on the grease-dark pivot spotted the darting beetle and swooped, wing-tips brushing Kane’s ear like a quick brushstroke. Kane jerked, and the added push made Delia hover, her feet swinging above the rubber surface. A strip of pale wood had been rubbed clean of paint by years of shifting shoes between the handles. Kane slid slowly toward that bare patch, using both palms for grip, hoping to shorten his lever arm. The plank reversed, and Kane’s heavier body met the bumper with a dull knock, sending a puff of ochre dust skyward.

On the nearby piece of playground furniture, Dean balanced a wooden picture frame against a bottle, the glass catching amber glare. He had been waiting for the timer on his camera to finish a cycle, yet each wobble spoiled the composition. A daffodil-yellow lunch box rattled beside the frame whenever the bumper kissed the ground, hinting at their uneven effort. Kane turned the walking stick sideways across their knees, its rubber tip pressed firmly against the pivot post like a quiet brace. Delia eased outward, sliding until her heels dangled past the scuffed edge and her weight stretched the plank toward balance. The squeak faded, the sparrow now chasing the beetle toward the swings, yet the seesaw hovered almost level under warm sunlight. At the first soft beep from the shutter, the picture frame kept upright, and Dean’s grin spread behind the camera. Kane stepped off the plank, crossed the rubber surface in three strides, and paused beside the shaded bench. He laid the walking stick across the backrest, and its loose wrist loop swayed gently against the sun-warmed wood.
