A hollow scrape rang along the supply-closet rail as Luke tugged the metal door toward him. He had promised the office assistant that the copier would run again before the next bell ended the period. The replacement toner cartridge waited somewhere behind the nearest shelf, yet a wide aluminium canister sprawled across the entrance. Cold morning air from the stairwell had chilled the canister; beads of moisture now imbued its surface with slick brightness. When Luke leaned in and tried to lift it, his fingertips slipped across the metal and lost every trace of grip. Moisture seemed to luxuriate across the smooth aluminium, forming a glassy coat that rejected each attempt. He braced both shoes against the polished floor and gave a courageous heave, but the canister barely shivered.

A wall-mounted heater glowed like a narrow electric hearth and exhaled a pale ribbon of warmth into the narrow closet. The heated air met the chilled canister, and a faint film of steam clouded the already wet skin of aluminium. Droplets rolled down, tapped the dusty track below, and turned the powder into a thin grey slurry. Each bead added weight until the sludge loosened, letting the heavy cylinder creep a thumb’s width on its own. Luke crouched, noticing the cylinder slid more easily along the glossy mud on the rail. He placed both palms flat and, with renewed verve, rolled the weight aside until the cartridge shelf appeared.

A wobble in the track threatened to bounce the canister forward, so Luke shoved a thick ream of scrap paper beneath it. The improvised wedge held, and colourless water still trickled, tracing silver threads that kept the cylinder gliding but within bounds. Luke reached over, caught the boxed cartridge, and backed into the corridor just as the bell sounded two short rings. The canister that had blocked the doorway was now inching on its watery track, leaving a widening gap under the fluorescent light. Tiny droplets kept falling from the metal skin and slid toward the drain line along the cool floor.

軌道出現晃動，筒罐似乎要向前彈出，盧克連忙把一疊廢紙厚紙壓到它下方作為楔塊。臨時楔塊穩住了圓筒，無色的水仍在滴落，畫出銀線般的痕跡，讓圓筒持續滑行卻不致失控。盧克伸手取走盒裝碳粉匣，正要退出走廊，鈴聲便連響兩下。原本堵門的筒罐此刻沿著濕軌慢慢前移，燈光下的缺口越來越大。細小的水珠不斷自金屬表面落下，在冰涼的地面上滑向排水溝。
