Steam Above One Spoon-

English 原文
"All of these little spoons point in exactly one direction."
Viola slid one closer to the edge of the bar, her wrist brushing the cool metal rail. Ronan leaned beside her, shifting his weight to dodge a waiter balancing plates along the narrow aisle. Early morning stiffness tugged at their shoulders after the dash through heavy rain from the bus stop. Drops slipped from their sleeves onto the stainless counter and travelled steadily toward a stack of upside-down cups. A ginger cat stretched along the footrest, tail swaying once before brushing Ronan’s ankle. Each pendant lamp threw a narrow beam across the spoons, turning their bowls into tiny silver compasses. Behind them the window curtain ballooned inward whenever the main door opened and a cooler gust slipped inside.
The barista set two drinks down together; steam drifted upward like soft flags that wavered with every breath. A ribbon of serendipity had arranged their orders in the same minute, though the kitchen queues rarely matched speeds. Ronan steadied his mug, needing a spoon to fold the foam, while Viola searched for the same tool. Their elbows bumped in a fortunate encounter that rippled circles across the chocolate surface. The aligned spoons had been placed for washing, faint sugar crust hugging every handle like thin bark. Only one polished piece rested apart, partly hidden underneath a folded napkin at the bar’s corner. If that spoon slipped, froth would scatter over the counter and slide toward the hanging glass rack. Viola tilted it toward Ronan, then drew back her fingers, shoulders loosening into a smaller curve.
Ronan rinsed the spoon beneath the drip nozzle, counted three slow heartbeats, and balanced it across his saucer rim. Viola angled her cappuccino beside his, guiding the water line to fall between cups while the cat observed every shift. When the utensil cooled, Ronan stirred his drink, then passed the handle into Viola’s open palm. She folded her foam with two slow circles and slid the spoon onto the rubber mat for the dishwasher. The earlier pattern revealed its code: clean handles faced out, used bowls pointed toward the sink queue. Ronan pressed the rinsed spoon onto a napkin, and two brown semicircles bled into the paper.
