Joy pushed the supply-closet door sideways, the ridged rail scraping her palm while loose dust grated against skin. She hoped to grab a stack of green backing paper for her group’s display before the bell cut the period short. A lunchbox inside her bag bumped her hip when she leaned forward to reach farther. Squashed bread and damp kale leaves pressed through the plastic seam with a faint give. The narrow corridor felt cooler than the classroom, yet the door panel grew warm after sun through the window. A sudden metallic rattle from the open window frame startled her and made the panel tremble. A sparrow flitted along the sill and vanished, its wings sending a ribbon of cooler air across her neck. That brief rush of moving air offered a clue: rhythm could matter far more than strength. She waited until the panel rocked back on its own and lifted slightly to free the lower wheel.
