Sam scooped a ribbon of pale sand into the sieve, and dusty grains poured down in a steady arc. When he lifted the sieve, five neat hollows remained beneath it, lined up like tiny bowls on a tray. A chalk-dry smell floated around his nose, mixing with the warm rubber scent rising from the coloured ground pads. He set his satchel beside the wooden frame; the canvas carried a leathery note and showed a stitched vulture gliding across one flap. Inside the bag waited a small plastic clownfish, still holding a faint vanilla aroma from last summer’s treats. Without any spoken agreement, nearby children kept their own space, leaving Sam the far sandbox corner. He brushed loose sand toward the hollows, yet the grains slipped away, too light to keep shape, so the first pocket collapsed.

Sam pressed the button, and a stream burst out, metallic on the tongue, while he bent over the cracked bucket. The moist sand he gathered felt cool and tasted faintly salty in the breeze that crossed the playground. He packed it into the five hollows, and the pattern finally stood firm before his eyes. Under afternoon light, the firm pattern now looked like scales along a buried fish rather than simple bowls. Yet every scoop he took from the damp pile pulled support from a nearby tower where the clownfish sat. Within seconds the damp base started to slump and release an earthy tang toward nearby toes. Sam paused, studied both creations under the sour drift, then slid the bucket between them.

A light breeze carried the mixed scents of rubber, wet sand, and distant popcorn around his knees. He reshaped the leaning tower with one palm, pressing wet sand into the gap. Then he smoothed the nearest hollow only halfway deep, leaving both designs uneven but steady. Sam brushed his fingers across the warm rubber surface, and a faint sandy odor lingered.

輕風把橡膠、濕沙與遠處爆米花的混合香送到他膝邊。他用手掌把傾斜的塔重新壓實，填入濕沙。接著只把最近的凹穴壓到半深度，兩件作品都不完美卻依然站立。山姆抹過溫暖的橡膠表面，淡淡的沙味停留在空氣裡。
