Blue’s Final Drop-

English 原文
The widest slot in the brush jar showed only a pale ring of dried sap, the usual occupant gone. Silas leaned forward, sniffing the jar’s woody scent while his fingers fished among thinner handles for the missing mop. He had inspected the porch table twice, yet the breeze carried only the honey-sweet smell of gum binder and the sour hint of yesterday’s rinse water. The winter scene on his paper needed one broad wash to link foreground ice with the distant trees and fix the perspective before the drying line slid lower. Lacking the wide brush, he lifted a narrow round, dipped it into a well where a bounty of blue had partly crusted, and dragged pigment across the glossy strip. The stroke left ridges, and darker streaks rose like mineral veins; the first attempt was drying too quickly to blend.
A sudden gust crossed the porch, twisting loose sheets and stirring the rinse cup so hard that tiny vortices revealed their kinetic energy through spirals of cloudy turquoise. Dry air followed the wind, speeding the seasonal evaporation on the left edge of the paper and shrinking Silas’s workable zone. He abandoned the thin brush, grabbed a plastic pipette—the only tool within reach that could spread water fast—and squeezed it into the cup until metallic-tasting droplets touched his lips. The bulb drew what little liquid remained, and he flicked that water onto the palette, softening the blue crust into a usable pool. With broader moisture ready, he released the diluted colour in sweeping beads along the receding boundary, watching the pigment bloom outward and swallow the stubborn streaks. The upper half stayed unchanged, but the lower half now showed a smooth frozen riverbank. The final bead of ultramarine slipped from the pipette onto the paper, and the plastic tube hung empty beside the board.
