Seaweed and dry grain drifted from Glen’s paper cup, mixing with the damp scent rising off the pond. Pale light from an early sunset slipped between willow branches, painting the water in long blue-grey stripes that broke around the low fountain at the centre. Glen traced the cool, rough granite railing with his free hand while Lily, a few steps behind, tapped the coin machine and waited. He aimed a small pinch toward the shaded corner where a broad shadow moved. The wind nudged the pellets off line; most landed on a lily pad cluster and stayed there like brown beads on glass. He switched position, sliding along the stones until the fountain spray no longer crossed his arm. A second throw cleared the leaves, yet the large fish remained hidden, the smaller ones forming a brief, tight braid that looked like a living family bond before scattering.

Spray from the fountain had soaked Glen’s fingertips, and the moisture crept into the paper seam. The rim tore without warning, spilling half the pellets onto the granite ledge and into the narrow gap between stones. Glen blinked at the mess, then pulled an ice-cream stick from his pocket, the souvenir of a snack eaten during the walk through the park landscape earlier that afternoon. Using the flat stick as a tiny paddle, he coaxed loose pellets along the ledge until they rolled quietly over the edge and dropped into the darker water below the willow. The hidden fish advanced, silver belly glinting, and drew three slow circles under the falling food. A sudden flap shattered the mirror surface; a duck swept in and claimed the floating crumbs, sending ripples across the pool. At the far bank, a grey heron unfolded its wings, slid across the cool air, and vanished beyond the fountain spray.
