Where the Water Changed Course-

English 原文
"Sturdy enough?" Lark knocked on the flat rock and watched muddy water tremble around its base, pale glare from the canopy gap flashing across the ripples. Pearl, usually the trailblazer in their pair, balanced one foot on the moss-coated trunk where uneven growth spurts made the surface rise and dip beneath the bright column of daylight. The rock tilted, letting a thin sheet of brown water leap forward; it slid under Pearl’s boot and darkened the green carpet with a quick sheen. She shifted back, her heartfelt laugh breaking the hush as her arms windmilled for balance. Together they nudged the stone again, pressing until it seemed still, its reflected gleam dull but steady beside the pooled darkness on the path.
A sudden burst of rain clattered through the canopy gap. Droplets struck the log top so hard that mist floated upward; both friends dashed beneath the root plate wall while stray shafts of dim light sliced between dangling roots. They stayed only moments, yet water gathered in the fresh groove left by Pearl’s boot, then streamed down the trunk. When they returned, that trickle had carved a narrow channel, draining toward a brittle limb resting against the bark. The limb lifted, carried by the small flow, and drifted sideways until it wedged across the trunk like an accidental gate, directing more water toward the fern-lined clearing.
Pearl planted another branch against the limb, limiting the new current before the whole surface turned slick. Lark steadied the wobbling rock once more, then stepped onto the log, placing feet where light struck rather than where shadow hid the slimy moss. With the flow redirected, they crossed slowly, boots leaving faint prints that shone for a moment before dimming. At the foot of the far side, a tawny frog emerged from beneath a fern, and, carried by the shallow stream, it kicked downstream past the quiet root wall toward deeper shade.
